How this differs from ESPN’s

ESPN’s power rankings are a vote of its analysts. This one comes from the QFS model, which reads the results:

  • Margin, not just wins. A team winning by 20 climbs faster than one winning by 2, so a record and a rank can disagree.
  • Who they played. Every score is weighed against the strength of the opponent.
  • A neutral field. Home field is taken out, so a run of home games does not lift a team.
  • Recent games count most. Last season still counts early and fades as this one fills in.
  • Scores, not headlines. An injury or a trade moves a team once it shows up in the results.
